Social media users around the world are increasing day by day. Reasons may vary, such as brand-promotion, connecting with friends, self-promotion, etc. Almost all social media platforms are now available on mobile devices making it easier to access by individuals.

According to the Emarsys statistics report of 2019, there are almost 3.5 billion social media users around the globe making 45% of the world population. Such a huger user-base becomes an easy target for hackers to gain access to your personal information and exploit it against you. Therefore, it is very important to know the ways to secure social media accounts if you do not want an interruption in your online world.

Do Not Click on the Random Link Sent Through Messages

One of the most common methods hackers use to breach your account is through sending you the malicious links. Learn the tips to avoid online frauds because scamming using these platforms are prevalent. Online sent links may contain viruses that can exploit your system or send you to a website that can trick you to store your details and scam you through some technique. Hence, avoid clicking on these types of links as they are very likely to be a phishing scam.

Keep Your Contact Details Private

Hackers are mostly after stealing your data through social media accounts. These details can be used for a phishing scam or identity theft. To avoid these types of malicious activities occurring to you, make your details private, especially your phone number. You can also make your images private on a social media platform like Facebook.

Set Two-Factor Authentication

Two-Factor Authentication is the method of authorizing a user’s identity by using two separate factors. A very common example of this method is user authentication through One Time Password (OTP). Setting up Two-Factor Authentication like OTP or security pin will help to increase the security of your social media accounts. Also, it makes it easy to recover your account if you forget the password or user ID through additional security questions.

Use a Good Password Manager

The easiest and quick method a cybercriminal uses to breach your social media account is by guessing your password. According to a survey by Microsoft, it is revealed that almost 63% of network invasions occur due to compromised user passwords and usernames.

People use different types of social media and account for various purposes. But fewer people take care of password security, despite being a basic step of cybersecurity. If your password is weak then you put your social media account’s safety at risk. Also, using the same password for different accounts is not a good concept.

Ethical hacking training focuses on password security primarily. Make a unique and strong password for each social media account. Modify the password regularly and use a password manager if you are having difficulty in using different accounts and passwords. Link different email accounts for different social media for additional security.

Do Not Tag Location While Sharing Posts

Tagging the location when we upload a picture, or any other post is done automatically mostly for social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. It is recommended to avoid using a geolocation tag on the posts. Keep the location tab of your phone camera off and make sure to turn off the location of your device when you upload a post. Be selective of which app you want to give location permission while installing in the first place.

Keep an Eye for Suspicious Account Activity

Keep on checking the activity of your social media account from time to time and take appropriate actions immediately if you witness any unusual activity. Do not leave any account abandoned, always delete it if you are leaving that social media platform. The best way to check an account activity is through emails, so make sure to get all the notification on your email account, especially the login activities.

In the End

Attacks on social media are on the rise. Hence, it is necessary to use them very cautiously and learn about online safety measures through ethical hacking training courses. Those were some simple methods that take your little time for implementation and keeps you safe online by avoiding social media attacks.
